The VISX Star S4 eximer laser  was the first in the United States to receive approval from the FDA for the treatment of low, moderate and high myopia, low to moderate ranges of hyperopia and astigmatism. The VISX Star S4 currently offers the widest range of correction available today for the treatment of these conditions. Current treatment options range up to -14.00 diopters of nearsightedness to +6.00 diopters of farsightedness and up to 5.00 diopters of astigmatism. The VISX Star S4 ActiveTrackTM Excimer Laser System actively tracks the horizontal, vertical and up and down motion of the eye in real time. This allows for extra safety and precision during the LASIK procedure by verifying the correct position of your eye before every laser pulse. With the ActiveTrak system, no pre-imaging or dilation is required and this allows full control of centration and engagement.

The VISX Technology Advantage:
How the Excimer Laser Can Affect Your Satisfaction with LASIK
Larger treatment zones minimize the likelihood that you
will experience night vision problems
51% Larger Treatment Zone: For nearsightedness and astigmatism, VISX is FDA approved to use an 8.0 mm treatment zone. Nidek is only approved for a 7.0 mm treatment zone.

Night vision problems after LASIK are more common if the laser utilizes smaller treatment zones Normal Ghosting Starburst and halos. Larger treatment zones minimize the likelihood that you will experience night vision problems.

Smoother corneal surfaces result in more rapid visual recovery and better visual acuity. VISX's smooth surface Nidek's rough surface VISX (left figure) produces the smoothest surface of any excimer laser system.

The VISX Custom Vue Lasik procedure allows up to a 9mm treatment zone. In a clinical study, four times as many people were very satisfied with their night vision after the procedure as compared to their night vision before with glasses or contact lenses.

One year after the Custom Vue Lasik procedure, patients in a clinical study reported these without glasses or contact lenses:

  • 100% could pass a driving test
  • 98% could see 20/20 or better
  • 70% could see better than 20/20
